- Area parks include Monte Irvin Orange Park, which features athletic fields, walking paths, a playground, and hosts free concerts in the summer, Kip’s Castle Park, which is a 9,000 sq. foot mansion that replicates a medieval castle and offers self-guided and holiday tours, the 69 acre Watsessing Park, which offers athletic fields, basketball courts, a bandstand, and a senior citizens building, Cedar Grove Park, the fourth largest park in Essex County, which is home to the Robert J. O’Toole Community Center, four bocce courts, a farm themed playground area, and three fitness stations along meandering walking paths, and Riker Hill Art Park, previously a United States Missile Tracking Base that has been transformed into 38 artist studios where artists-in-residence work.
- The five Reservations include the West Essex Reservation, 1,360 acres of undeveloped wetlands preserve; Eagle Rock Reservation, which features the 40-mile Lenape Trail; Hilltop Reservation, a nature preserve with short trails that has been certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a “Wildlife Habitat”; Mills Reservation, where you can find walking and jogging trails and a view that overlooks the New York skyline; and South Mountain Reservation, a 2,000-acre nature preserve that includes trails and a dog park.
- Essex County has three public golf courses to choose from when you’re looking to tee off. The Francis Byrne and Hendricks Field Golf Courses, which were designed as private country club courses by noted golf architect Charles Banks in 1926 and 1926, respectively, and Weequahic Park Golf Course, the oldest public course in New Jersey, designed in 1913.
