When moving to a new neighborhood, it’s nice to meet your neighbors. Knowing your neighbors and being friendly with them can make your new community feel more inviting and welcoming. In addition, meeting your new neighbors is an excellent way to settle in at your new house. Neighbors can also be a great asset if you ever need help at home, so it’s essential to develop good relationships. Not sure how to meet people or start those relationships? See our suggestions below.
Offer Something Small
Give your neighbors a gift, and take the opportunity to introduce yourself. Not sure what kind of gift to give your neighbors? Here are some ideas:
- Baked goods. Make your neighbors some cookies. Take care to avoid baked goods that contain common allergens, such as nuts or strawberries.
- Hand-made decorations. Ask them to make decorations that others will appreciate if you have children, like a homemade decoration glued to a refrigerator magnet.
- Starter seeds. Give your neighbors seeds for their garden – this is the perfect gift idea if you’re moving into your new home during a growing season.
Wave “Hi” to People Who Pass
One of the best ways to meet new neighbors is to show that you are friendly and open to contact. You don’t have to go to their doorstep to do this: simply wave when you see them pass or wave when you pass by them.
By waving and acknowledging your neighbors, you show them that you are interested in them and open to conversation. In addition, by waving, you can facilitate future interactions and get to know one another more easily.
Have a Neighborhood Barbecue
Once settled into your new home, consider having a neighborhood barbecue in your yard. Invite the people on your street to encourage conversation and get to know one another. This is a good idea if you’re especially social. However, if you or any other members of your household feel shy, this may not be the strategy for you.
Spend Time In the Yard
If you’re outside when your neighbors are around, there will be more opportunities to say “hi” to them. This is the perfect time to work on your landscaping, plant flowers, trim your grass – and say “hi” to the people nearby when you see them.
Offer to Help Neighbors Who Need It
Living in the neighborhood means you’ll occasionally see people who could use some help. For example, you might see a neighbor struggling to fix their mailbox or take on a landscaping challenge.
Offer to help when you feel capable and have time. For example, you might lend them some tools, lend them a hand, or offer some knowledge that you have that might help them. This will open the door to helping at other times – and you’ll be able to ask for help when you need it, too.
