Starting in September, the Queens County Farm Museum offers fall festivities for the whole family. There’s also a Harvest Dance, a pumpkin patch, Halloween events, maize races, and the annual Queens County Fair. 2. New York Film Festival

The New York Film Festival has heralded the changing seasons for over six decades. Starting on Labor Day weekend and running for the next two weeks, the festival draws film buffs and industry insiders from around the world. Venues around the city host special showings and events; check the calendar at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens to see local offerings.

3. Harvest Fire Feast

Head to Socrates Sculpture Park in late September for the Harvest Fire Feast. This all-ages event celebrates the season’s bounty and teaches some traditional culinary skills, too. Learn how to cook vegetables over an open fire in new and creative ways. Pre-registration is required.

4. Franklin Square Museum Fall Festival

The Franklin Square Historical Society annually hosts a fun fall festival on the Franklin Square Museum grounds. This family-friendly event draws people from around Long Island for food, drinks, games, pumpkins, raffles, craft vendors, and activities for kids. A big part of the draw to this event has to be the huge community garage sale that takes place simultaneously.

5. Brooklyn Folk Festival

Every November, the Brooklyn Folk Festival draws music fans worldwide. This renowned festival brings top-tier performers for a three-day celebration of music. Performances occur in St. Ann and the Holy Trinity Church, a National Historic Landmark. This event has strong historical ties with Folkways Records and brings legendary musicians from various genres to the stage.

6. Schmitt’s Family Farm Fall Festival

Just a short drive from Queens, Schmitt’s Family Farm puts on a fall festival each year. All ages can enjoy snacking on candy apples, playing a round or two of mini-golf, and meeting cute farm animals at the petting zoo. Hop on a tractor and ride to the U-pick pumpkin, sunflower, and vegetable patches to fill your bags with the season’s bounty.
