Two months feels like plenty of time. Then you blink, and it is moving week, the utility company is not answering, and the movers need a certificate of insurance by Friday. A New Jersey move, especially in and out of dense Hudson County spots like Harrison, Jersey City, or Newark, rewards the people who plan early. Here is what to tackle eight weeks out.
Week 8: Pick a Mover and Lock the Date
Start by narrowing down moving companies and getting at least three written estimates. A reputable mover will do an in-home or video walkthrough before quoting. Verbal quotes over the phone are a warning sign. Check that any interstate mover is registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and has an active USDOT number.
Once you have picked your mover, lock in the date in writing. Summer and month-end dates in New Jersey book up fast. If you have flexibility, a mid-month weekday move is often cheaper and easier to schedule.
Week 7: Start the Declutter
You do not want to pay to move things you no longer need. Walk through every closet, the garage, and the basement. Sort into keep, donate, sell, and toss piles. Local charities in North Jersey will often pick up furniture for free, and a few Facebook Marketplace posts can turn old pieces into gas money.
Pro Tip: Snap a photo of every electronic setup before you unplug anything. Cable configurations behind your TV, your gaming console, your home office router. You will thank yourself when it comes time to plug everything back in.
Week 6: Notify the Important People
Change of address is where a lot of movers stall out. Get ahead of it now.
- File a change of address with the United States Postal Service. Mail forwarding can take up to two weeks, so submit early.
- Update your driver’s license and vehicle registration with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. If you are moving into New Jersey from out of state, you have 60 days to transfer your license.
- Notify your bank, credit cards, insurance company, employer, and voter registration.
- Update pharmacies, doctors, and your kids’ school.
If you are moving into a Jersey City or Newark high-rise, ask your new building for their move-in requirements. Many require a certificate of insurance from your mover and a reserved elevator window, similar to NYC buildings.
Week 5: Order Supplies and Start Packing Non-Essentials
Order packing supplies early. A typical two-bedroom home takes 30 to 40 boxes plus wardrobe boxes for closets. Get a mix of small, medium, and large. Small boxes for books and dishes, larger boxes for linens and pillows.
Start packing rooms you barely use. Off-season clothes, holiday decorations, books, and the back of your closet can all get boxed up now. Label every box on the top and one side with the destination room.
Week 4: Handle Utilities and Services
Schedule utility shutoffs at your current place and turn-ons at your new one. In New Jersey, that typically means PSE&G for gas and electric, plus your internet provider. Aim for utilities to be active at the new place the day before your move so the fridge is running and the AC works when you arrive.
If you have kids in school, register them at the new district and request records transfers. Update your car insurance to reflect your new zip code. New Jersey rates vary significantly between counties.
Pro Tip: Set up an emergency go-bag at the same time you build your moving essentials kit. The Ready.gov build-a-kit list doubles as a great first-night reference, since it covers water, food, medications, and documents you should always have within reach.
Weeks 3 to 1: The Final Push
- Week 3: Confirm your moving date and time. Ask about parking permits or truck size restrictions for your new street. Narrow Harrison and Newark side streets sometimes need a permit for a full-size truck.
- Week 2: Pack most of the house. Return borrowed items, pick up dry cleaning, and refill prescriptions for a 30-day supply.
- Week 1: Pack your essentials kit, prep the fridge and freezer (empty, defrosted, clean), and confirm payment method with your mover.
